1. On the Bog Road

And it was that summer fear for the marriage

arrived in search of me. I don’t know where

it came from, from ten thousand years

of heavy rainfall, its continual beat

against the rotting flowers to make peat.

It did not come from skylark or meadow

pipit, butterwort or mountain sorrel, not

the turf banks, not the occasional pony

munching tufts of moorgrass

but in the bogs one afternoon I was summoned

in wet Gore-Tex and muddy jeans.

There I was without you, and fear

slid his ringed hand from his cassock and he touched me.
